Orthodontic Emergency?
What You Need To Know
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial alignment issues to create healthy, confident smiles.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dentist with 2–3 additional years of training in straightening teeth, correcting bite issues, and improving jaw alignment and function.
When should I take my child to the orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit by age 7 to catch developing issues early. That said, it’s never too late—orthodontic care is for kids, teens, and adults alike.
How do I take care of my teeth with braces or a retainer?
Brush after every meal, floss daily, and use fluoride toothpaste. Keep retainers clean and stored safely in a case when not in use. Avoid sticky, hard, or sugary foods, and continue seeing your dentist every six months.
What are braces?
Braces are appliances used to straighten teeth and improve bite alignment. Options include clear ceramic braces, self-ligating braces, and traditional metal braces.
How long will I wear braces?
Treatment time varies, but most patients wear braces for 12–24 months depending on their unique needs.
Do braces hurt?
You might feel some soreness for a few days after getting braces or adjustments, but it’s temporary and manageable.
Do I need to brush more with braces?
Yes. Brush at least three times a day and floss daily to remove food and plaque around brackets and wires.
Do I still need to see my dentist during treatment?
Absolutely. Regular dental checkups are even more important with braces to prevent cavities and keep your mouth healthy.
Can I still play sports or instruments with braces?
Yes! You may need time to adjust, and a mouthguard is recommended for contact sports to protect your braces.
